”Publish or perish!” is the good old dictum in research communities for the last so many decades. There is a renewed interest in publishing among surgeons working in our country, after the National Medical Commission (NMC) has made publications in indexed journals mandatory for promotions to various academic posts. Publication is considered as a surrogate marker of one's scientific and academic achievement. There is a high demand for publications in the present day scientific society. Indian surgical residents have to mandatorily do a scientific research as a part of their post graduate degree course.
Publication can be considered as an evidence of intellectual ownership of an idea. It may help the surgeon to get funding from external agencies depending on the novelty of the idea. Surgeons with high quality and greater number of publications may be employed by prestigious institutions. Trainees who wish to enter higher surgical training require a minimum number of publications as an evidence of their academic pursuit among other achievements. What to publish? Original articles, reviews, letters to editor, case reports and case series are the various headings under which one can publish. Prospective research work requires significant time and effort to complete the project. Prospective randomized trials are difficult for trainees who rotate their postings at frequent intervals. A more practical and quicker way for a trainee may be to retrospectively analyze a consultant's work. Case reports and case series are useful for documenting new diseases and provide general awareness about important clinical points.
Selecting an appropriate journal for publication is very crucial. It can affect publisher's visibility, reception and citations. Vigilance is required to avoid many vogue journals currently publishing articles without sufficient scrutiny. It is advisable to select a particular journal before writing an article. This enables the author to address the readers in a correct manner and match the journal's requirements. Authors may also choose between printed or electronic publications or between paid or open access journals. There are many tools such as Elsevier's Journal Finder which can help the author to find out the most appropriate journal.
Kerala Surgical Journal is the official mouth piece of the Association of Surgeons of India, Kerala Chapter. It is being published twice a year. The journal is in the process of getting indexed. The Editorial Board headed by the chief Editor Dr. Fazil Marickar and the other eminent editors are doing an excellent job, by bringing out the journal at regular intervals. I wholeheartedly congratulate them on behalf the Kerala Chapter. In the journey towards indexation, it requires, wholehearted support from all our members. We need all your original works to be published through KSJ. The post graduate thesis work itself can bring sufficient original articles for the journal. We also need enough annotators who are willing to review the articles in a time bound manner. If my surgeon colleagues in Kerala stand united for this cause, we can bring out a journal, where the whole world would like to publish.
I wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year.
