Dear Members of ASI Kerala Chapter,

I hope everyone is doing well and sincerely wish everyone a happy and healthy year ahead. 2020 was a year of hurdles and our life had changed in many ways including our social, professional and academic activities. During this period, the ASI Kerala chapter also had changed for good. All of our meetings and academic activities were changed to hybrid or online virtual platforms.


  EKASICON 2020 Top


The 43rd annual conference of ASI Kerala Chapter was held at Holy Cross Hospital, Adoor on 7th and 8th of November 2020. It was the first web-based KASICON. The first day was completely dedicated for unedited videos. Twenty video demonstrations were done. The second day witnessed the MRS Menon free paper session, Prof. Raghavachari oration by Dr. Sudhindran S, Mohandas memorial oration by Dr. C J Varghese, inauguration, GB meeting and 16 topic presentation. Susrutha award was given to Dr. C Karthikeyan. Dr. YM Fazil Marickar (Organising Chairman), Dr. Jayan Stephen (Organising Secretary) and Dr. Suresh Raghavan (Treasurer) conducted the meeting. The annual GB of ASI Kerala Chapter was held on 8th November 2020 at Lotus Club, Cochin, in the online platform during which Dr. EV Gopi took charge as the ASI Kerala Chapter President for the year 202021.


  Annual CME Top


Our annual PG CME was conducted at Calicut Medical College on the 27th and 28th of February 2021 under the leadership of our President Dr. EV Gopi. It was a great online CME with theme-based case discussions from various medical colleges in the state with national faculties. Dr. MP Sreejayan delivered the Prof. ML Dathan memorial lecture on the second day. Dr. OT Muhammed Basheer (Organising Chairman) and Dr. NP Jayan (Organising Secretary) conducted the meeting.


  Peripheral Meeting Top


Our peripheral meeting was held at Kanhangad on 13th June 2021 by Kasaragod Surgical Club under the leadership of Dr. Satish Kumar, Organising Chairman and Dr. Namdev Shenoy as Organising Secretary and Dr. KO Raveendran as Organising Treasurer. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. M Vijayakumar, Vice Chancellor, Yenappoya University. It was a well-arranged meeting with various topics discussed in detail by senior faculties from the state.


  Election Report Top


Dr R Padmakumar was nominated by the Executive Committee as the Chief Election Officer. The election process was initiated on 15th June 2021 and the following members were unanimously elected for the year 2021–2022. The following office bearers were elected-Chairman - Dr. EV Gopi, Chairman elect - Dr. Binni John, Past Chairman - Dr. R Padmakumar, Hon. Secretary - Dr. Jayan Stephen, Past Secretary - Dr. Jimmy John, Joint secretary - Dr. Kailasanadhan, Hon. Treasurer-Dr. Suresh R. Executive committee members-Dr. Mohammed Salim, Dr. SK AjayaKumar, Dr. Vimal Iype, Dr. TV Haridas, Dr. Shajahan, Dr. KA Siddiq, Dr. Srinivas, Dr. Rajesh PS, Dr. P Vinodkumar and Dr. Swamidasan.


  Orations for the Year 2021–2022 Top


Prof Raghavachari oration – was awarded to Dr. Sreejayan MP, Dr. N Mohandas memorial oration to Dr. Abdul Latheef and Dr. M L Dathan memorial endowment lecture to Dr. C J Varghese.


  Research Grants Top


Last General Body had approved three research grants for the year 2020–2021. However, only one project was finalised and reported by Dr. Fazil Marickar on the project, 'Retrospective analysis of epidemiology of urolithiasis in Kerala last 50 years 1970 2020'. This was awarded. For the year 2021 − 2022, there was only one nomination by Dr. YM Fazil Marickar on the topic 'PRISMA – meta-analysis of risk of stone formation'. This was approved.


  Future Meetings Top


Annual CME was awarded to Thrissur, Peripheral meeting to Pathanamthitta and Annual Conference to Thiruvananthapuram.


  Kerala Surgical Journal Top


During the last year, we made a bold decision to proceed with the indexation activities of the Kerala Surgical Journal and we made an agreement with Wolters Kluwer for online publishing and indexing work of our journal. I sincerely thank our members and surgical societies who had supported us during this crisis time to generate the corpus fund for the KSJ. Two issues of the journal were published in time with high-quality original articles. Hopefully, our journal will get indexed in the coming year, so that our journal will be self-sustainable.


  KSJ Awards Top


The following KSJ awards were announced be the Awards Committee.

  1. Best Review Paper: Dr. Sandeep Babu, KIMS, Trivandrum. Papillary carcinoma Thyroid
  2. Best Original Paper: Dr. Rakesh S. Ramesh, St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore. Sentinel Lymph node biopsy
  3. Best Case Report: Dr. Toney Jose, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore, hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm
  4. Best Clinical Photograph: Dr. Sreekanth S Kumar, Asst Professor of Surgical Oncology, Medical College, Kozhicode-: Sebaceous/carcinoma breast
  5. Best X-ray: Dr. Aravind S. Ganpath, Asst Professor of Urology, Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjarammoodu-Vesical Calculus
  6. Best Thesis: 1st Prize: Akshaya Mohan, Dept of Surgery, Medical College, Kozhikode-Colorectal malignancy. 2nd Prize: Dr. Aparna, Department of Surgery, Medical College, Kozhikode − splenic injuries.


I am really grateful to my Chairman Dr. EV Gopi for the total support and advice. I also thank all the Executive committee members and seniors for their constant encouragement and support. Many of our social and academic activities were suspended during the time of the pandemic. I hope that once the situation is under control, we should be able to roll back to our energising get together and all academic activities in the near future.
